护食这种行为在狗狗中很常见。一项研究报告称，有近20%的狗狗曾出现过护食的行为。根据狗狗护食表现的严重程度，分为三个等级：
轻度
当狗狗在进食时如果接近它，它可能会咆哮，也可能会露出牙齿或抬起头来警告。
中度
当人或其他动物接近它们时，护食的狗狗会猛烈地叫喊或冲撞。
重度
严重护食的狗狗可能对人或其他动物造成危险，它们可能会咬人。
