激素过多或缺乏综合征可由多种机制引起。对于狗狗来说，激素过多的最常见原因是内分泌组织本身有腺瘤、增生或继发部位有肿瘤，进而刺激激素分泌过多。涉及激素缺乏的综合征通常是由于自身免疫攻击和内分泌器官被破坏了，难以产生足够的激素。
